Each time a significant awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a demand to include of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and delight the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.
My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category that year
- Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games globally maintaining this status for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge game development, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
