The Trump movement's most revealing and defining instances – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of a few weeks, the American president commenced revealing the public his plans for a gilded ballroom twice the size than the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to construct it.
He has performed deeds 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of deaths resulting from his reductions to international aid stands at 600,000 and rising, and presently research forecast his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No other president would have attempted – really, no former commander would have conceived – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the executive mansion in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the active collaboration of some of the richest Americans, almost all of whom conduct transactions with public institutions.
We transitioned from 'the meek shall inherit the planet' toward 'the humble will perish from cholera'
As disorienting as it is to observe the president try to upend the traditional concept of democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there is one large group of Americans who might not perceive it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have witnessed over the years as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we learned about into the total contrary of our understanding of him. Essentially, they transformed an image of affection into a symbol of hostility who blesses exactly the harshness that he condemned in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more gradually, over decades instead of months, yet it remains disturbing in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for countless people.
A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold
So let me first describe the Savior from my upbringing, since in theory the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and since the rapidly expanding group among Americans might have little sense about him because they identify as non-believers or agnostics or spiritual independents. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that exist valuable insights of substantial value within Christian narrative.
It is decidedly not the account of an authoritative monarch arising; instead, an infant arrives to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to a different country to avoid undercover officers. The child matures in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his doctrine concerns compassion for other people, specifically for the disadvantaged – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. Christ's response to hostility is to turn the additional cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a means to educate the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing states that when a person pilfers your jacket you should give him your sweater also.
The evident and clear fact that the Savior in biblical accounts calls for a form of profound affection focused on the poor is what has always made the Christian faith somewhat of a scandalous religion: attractive to the general public, but owing to its intrinsic extremism needing to be controlled. In the fifties it was contained through watering down – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it practically sanctified existing conditions.
A Struggle for the Highest Within Us
Therefore I have felt heartened to see the determined opposition against Trump develop during the previous year. It has been substantial consolation to help build the campaign that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and likely has encouraged citizens to turn out in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We will need to persist with it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners at every demonstration and appeals to the highest qualities in US history.
We will be questioned ... regarding how you welcomed the immigrant? Did you welcome them and receive them or refuse?
The nation is most protected, to put it differently, through connection to the finest in US heritage, similar to Christianity is optimally secured by reference to what makes it unique and wonderful, which is the example of Christ. In both situations does it imply pretending the most damaging regarding America and religious tradition never occurred; it represents both humility and conviction, a blend that committed US believers ought to accept.
