TikTok Content Creators Driving Unofficial Market for Unapproved Slimming Drug

A shadow market for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and sellers on messaging platforms, according to recent findings.

Experimental Treatment Gaining Traction Online

The experimental drug, which remains in research studies, is being advertised by social media influencers for its supposed fat-burning effects. Followers are encouraged to message these profiles privately for source information, while also receiving discount codes.

Active Trade on Social Networks

Separately, a flourishing market exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of members share comparison images, injection guides and claims of next-day UK delivery. Sellers market the drug there before redirecting buyers to WhatsApp for purchases.

Learning About Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an experimental injectable created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Early trials suggest it could help patients reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the next Ozempic.

Healthcare Experts Express Worries

However, doctors and chemists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unapproved medication in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could result in users administering products of unknown origin.

Some professionals said the popularity for retatrutide could be linked to the increasing cost of approved slimming products such as Mounjaro.

Legal Position and Implementation

Selling the unapproved drug on TikTok or messaging apps is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved drug that must not be marketed or distributed for human use under the British medical regulations.

Several influencers attempt to sidestep the regulations by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled substance, but promotion and distribution can still breach medicines, advertising, and consumer regulations, risking fines, prosecution or prison.

Platform Reaction and Material Removal

Based on TikTok, the platform has removed violative material and banned related keywords and query recommendations. The organization said it was dedicated to maintaining the platform safe and allocating resources in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Online Marketplace Activities

Investigations also found groups with up to 9,000 members selling the experimental drug using the platform's built-in discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly brings up channels with thousands of members, populated with photos of weight loss, positive reviews and detailed instructions for mixing or administering at residence.

Within minutes of joining one group, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where the majority of transactions occur. The seller sent an instruction manual and promised shipping within two days. When questioned whether the product was genuine, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a supposed testing documentation. Not one inquired about weight, medical conditions or past usage.

Item Information and Costs

Within these groups, posts display black plastic packages with postal service labels, claiming to include fresh supplies. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between powder vials, mixed at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use pens usually priced at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how much time a pen should be used, vendors give contradictory answers ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.

Service Oversight and Security Actions

A representative for Telegram stated it regularly monitored harmful content on its platform including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Expert Cautions

“People are administering substances they cannot confirm. Although the research behind retatrutide is valid, these online versions may not include what they advertise,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

A medical professional of Asda Online Doctor connected the increase in interest to recent cost increases for authorized weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, patients are turning to online platforms. But fake injections are highly risky. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the conditions they were made in was clean,” she said.

Her team has already encountered patients injured by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We understand the disappointment, but buying from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your well-being,” said the doctor. “These substances could be impure or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Position

A spokesperson from Eli Lilly said retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this point no one can sell [it] for human use,” they said, noting that any item “falsely representing itself as a company investigational substance not yet approved … may subject users to potentially serious medical dangers”.
