Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the right to question certain decisions made by the official, mirroring the system currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move comes just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
